CONVENTION OF HORROR GENRE;

                                                          SOUND

  1. Sudden jump scares to startle the audience.
  2. Amplified heartbeat or breathing sounds for intensity.
  3. Strategic use of silence to build tension.
  4. Enhanced diegetic sounds to create discomfort and suspense.

                                                    MISE-EN-SCENE

  • High key light
we used natural light in our project.

  • Low key light

we used low key lights because deep, distinct shadows/silhouettes are formed.

CAMERA WORK:

  • Using slow tracking shots to build suspense.
  • Sudden camera pans to create unexpected tension.
  • Unconventional angles to unsettle the audience.
  • Dutch angles to evoke disorientation and discomfort.
  • Filming at night to maintain an eerie and suspenseful atmosphere.

                                                       NARRATIVE

I choose linear narrative for my film opening brief.

THE CONJURING, THE OTHERS, SMILE 2, MALIGNANT.

WHY WE CHOOSE THE LINEAR NARRATIVE?

The advantages of linear storytelling are rather clear, making it convenient for us to use while creating a movie. It facilitates the audience's ability to relate to and comprehend the producer's whole concepts.

                                                     COMERA WORK

  •  Close up is what we to convey the genuine intensity of the main character.
  • We use long shots when the car is approaching.
  •  over-the-shoulder shots to show the driver operating a vehicle.

Analysis of some of my favorite opening scenes.

  The Conjuring 2

The Conjuring 2's opening sequence is a masterwork of atmosphere and suspense building, drawing viewers right into the spooky mood of the movie. The sequence, which takes place in the notorious Amityville home, skillfully combines spooky cinematography, creepy quiet, and unexpected supernatural events to evoke a sense of dread. Setting the scene for the remainder of the movie, Ed and Lorraine Warren's exploration of the haunting through Lorraine's vision is both visually arresting and compelling from a narrative standpoint. One of the franchise's most iconic openers, it perfectly blends supernatural and psychological horror.

THE OTHERS:

An eerie and tense mood is established right away in the first scene of *The Others* (2001). The viewer is immediately unnerved when Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman) wakes up screaming, perhaps from a nightmare. The backdrop, a huge estate shrouded in fog, adds to the Gothic tone of the movie by feeling remote and unsettling. Due to her children's light sensitivity, Grace, a stern and pious mother, employs three new maids and establishes odd home regulations, such as keeping all doors shut and blinds drawn. A feeling of mystery is immediately created by this peculiar constraint. The movie builds suspense by using slow pacing, low lighting, and quiet, which makes even small noises unnerving. The psychological and otherworldly terror that follows is set up by this expertly written start.

SMILE 2

*Smile 2* opens with a powerful and captivating sequence that takes place six days after the events of the previous film. Joel, a former police officer, is determined to escape the Entity's curse, which continues to haunt him. He plans to transfer the curse by killing a drug dealer in front of a witness in order to get rid of the fear. But when a shootout breaks out, both dealers are killed, and mayhem ensues. Lewis, an innocent spectator, thus unwittingly becomes the next victim. The scene, which is shot in a smooth, continuous shot, puts the viewer in Joel's panic and despair and establishes a tense, foreboding tone for the narrative.

INFORMAL SURVEY

TARGET AUDIENCE
This is an updated version aimed for 16-21 people and catered to the horror genre.

"People between the ages of 13 and 24 accounted for 91% of our survey responses, which is consistent with our original target demographic. Research suggests that most horror films earn a 16+ classification owing to heavy themes, making 16-21 the optimum age range for our picture.

This belief is frequently founded on preconceptions, even though statistics indicates that men are typically more inclined to the horror genre. We are aiming for both male and female audiences in order to guarantee inclusivity.

Horror films generally tackle dark themes, phobias, and societal issues, which significantly appeal with younger viewers seeking adrenaline-fueled entertainment. The genre appeals to thrill-seekers in this way because it frequently portrays supernatural powers, psychological fear, and the conflict between good and evil.

EQUIPMENT AND TECHNOLOGY

At first, we planned to film using my Nikon D3400 DSLR camera. But when we started, it was difficult to record some scenes with it. So, we decided to use a mobile phone instead because I am good at making videos on my phone. That’s why we chose to shoot the film on a mobile.

To keep the video steady, we used a tripod with the mobile phone. This made the video look more professional and neat, which is helpful for making good content.

We also used a ring light to make sure the lighting was bright enough, especially in darker areas. The ring light helped everything look clear and bright.

For editing, we used my DELL laptop, which I have had for about a year. Since I have used it for editing before, we decided to use it again for this project.

MOOD BOARD

I made this mood board for our project's final presentation in December 2023. We believed that this set of pictures encapsulated the mood we were trying to create. We also discovered that using a mood board really aided the color grading procedure.

CHARACFTER PROFILES

THE WORKERS
Routine and tiredness define his existence as a tired, unseen worker who drifts home at night after working late shifts. He is a guy of few words, lost in the routine of life and hardened by years of work.
Something dark crosses his path one evening as he is driving home. He is suddenly thrown into a sinister mystery that he cannot comprehend, only another player in a much bigger game than himself.
